Keynote Speaker: Carrie Host
Saturday, May 1, 2010

Carrie Host is a mother of three and the author of a memoir titled "Between Me and the River" (2009, Harlequin). She has a rare and incurable form of cancer called Carcinoid Tumor, for which she receives monthly treatments.

She is a member of the Board for the Caring For Carcinoid Foundation in Boston. She speaks to cancer patients and survivors at related events across the country. A former docent at the Denver Art Museum. A current member of Toastmasters International. And the co-founder of the Colorado Youth Program, a non-profit camp for kids in Boulder, Colorado.

She lives and writes in Boulder, Colorado with her husband Amory and their three children, Chanel now 20, Marco 18 and baby William, 7. Her memoir, "Between Me and the River" was chosen as the "Indie- Next" pick. Her book has also garnered some very fine reviews from prestigious notables: Publisher's Weekly says, "Host's honest depiction of her personal experiences also captures the universal aspects of cancer." Library Journal says, "A beautifully written memoir for all audiences." And the Kirkus Review says, "While some authors face their situation with an arsenal of rage and dark, pointed humor, debut author Host writes about her illness with the nuanced grace of a poet whose perspective extends beyond her own experience, including the anguish of watching her family navigate immense upheaval as she struggles to overcome the ravages of carcinoid cancer. The author weaves creative metaphor into her harsh reality, striking a balance between hardship and revelation."

Her personal favorite currently floats on the ocean on the back cover of the book. Ironically, it was the first review she received almost four years ago, after having sent the entire manuscript in its first draft along with a compelling letter to best-selling author Clive Cussler in hopes that he might give her his endorsement. He did just that. He said: "A powerful, thought-provoking book that never leaves you. For more information, please visit Carrie's website at www.carriehost.com.
